Have you begun to notice that as a result of the large percent of the population living in apartments and condos. Buying into homes with less property or association regulations that prohibit digging a garden. The alternative to grow backyard garden vegetables in a container has risen greatly. You may wonder is it expensive of difficult? Although some think it is expensive and difficult. Actually it is easy and rather affordable when you consider the cost of veggies and they are healthier and better for you along with the knowledge of where your produce came from and the reward of doing it yourself.
We will use basil as a start for your container garden. To begin you will need the following garden supplies. Three or four pots with drainage holes and something underneath to catch the drainage. Packet of basil seeds, bag of organic compost, bag of peat moss, small garden trowel, small watering can and a nice sunny spot and the good thing is you can move your container to a better spot if necessary. Quick tip recently at my local dollar store they had bags of potting soil for . I loaded up the trunk what I don’t use now I can use later.
To properly prepare your soil for your backyard garden in containers mix in 5 parts of compost and 1 part peat moss once you have enough fill your first container 1/2 inch from the top with your mix. A single pot in the right spot on your patio or deck looks good. One more pot same size or not will hurt the look, but a third one will recreate the beauty again at least in my eyes. The overall appearance of your container garden should be pleasing to your eye and that of your quest and the association police who will write you up in a second.
Planting your seeds is simple just make holes around 1 inch deep put a couple seeds in each hole cover with your soil and water lightly. Soon your sprouts will reach a height of 2 inches remove extra sprout so you only have one in each spot. Now all you need to do is water regularly when the soil feels dry pull any weeds if there are any. So that they have bushy growths pinch of the tops every couple weeks and remove any flower stalks and process works for all herbs.
Randomly arranging some flower pots in and around your container garden will add to the aesthetic value with some color and a creative mind to have a pleasant container garden scenario that will be attractive to your friends and unexpected quests.

When designing a small backyard garden you can grow a surprising amount of vegetables and plants by using intensive planting techniques and crop rotation. This article looks at how to grow backyard garden plant a three season garden so that you get the most out of a small area. It takes close spacing – though not too close as to affect the plants growth and then growing from Spring to Autumn or Fall vegetables and flowers combined. This gets you a backyard garden that provides food for the table as well as looks attractive all in a place as compact as 4ft by 4ft.
First of all you need to prepare the soil properly, tilling, weeding, watering and using organic fertilizer or compost if the soil needs it. You need to have at least six hours of direct sunlight a day too. You can also maximize what you can grow by using fencing for vertical planting. Though specific vegetables are mentioned for this plant a three season garden plan you can take out those you do not like and put in ones you prefer.
Grow Backyard Garden – SpringBulbs planted in Autumn will flower in early Spring creating an attractive backyard garden. As spring moves on the sugar peas planted to climb the fence will start producing as will broccoli that you can have in the middle of Johnny jump-ups. Once the main central head is cut you should have smaller ones forming on side shoots. Inter-planted with beet or carrots are radishes which grow quickly, you can eat them in three weeks, and they help to keep the soil nice and loose for vegetables that root deeper. You may also want to consider trying New Zealand spinach which can take an increase in temperature better than the regular kind, and have some lettuce too.
Grow Backyard Garden – SummerThose early season vegetables will stop producing as the weather gets warmer and you move into the beginning of summer. At this point for those of you who want to plant a three season garden you will bring out mid season seeds you started indoors or you can buy from a nursery or gardening center. Running up the fencing is going to be runner or pole beans and these are the only thing that do not need starting ahead of time as they grow very quickly. But with them you can out in a tomato plant and have a lettuce that can handle the warm weather near by so that it gets some shade. Between the broccoli can be grown nasturtium and an eggplant, pepper and a patch of chives. At the front of the garden have some herbs that grow low and flowers that are edible. For color and to help with controlling the bugs also grow dwarf marigolds and dianthus.
Grow Backyard Garden – AutumnThe final change in Autumn to adjust to the cooling weather. Leave the tomatoes, they will keep doing well. You could have a small squash or pumpkin along the fence and chrysanthemums will flower in autumn. Use the time to tidy up and plant bulbs ready for early spring. If you plant a three season backyard garden you can maximize what you get from it in terms of the vegetables and appearance, it just takes some planning!

What Jobs Need Doing In Your Organic Garden At The End Of Summer?
Posted by: | CommentsWhat Jobs Need Doing In Your Organic Garden At The End Of Summer?
Article by James Woolley
As I write this article it is now the start of August, which means that we are rapidly approaching the end of summer and the beginning of autumn. So if you are an organic gardener, this means there is a lot of work to be done, which is why I thought it would be a good idea to write this article offering you a few useful tips.
There are lots of things going on at this time of the year. You have the children at home on their school holidays, you have family vacations abroad, and you have barbecues and a general malaise as you enjoy the last of the hot weather for another year. All this means that it is easy to neglect your garden, but it is vitally important that you give your garden the attention it deserves.
The first thing you need to do is to make sure that your garden gets plenty of water. This is always important, but it is even more important at this time of the year because gardens can easily get very dry. It is best done either at the start of the day or at the end of the day for various reasons, and you should continue watering until the autumn, when there is often more dew on the ground and more rainfall.
If you are away on holiday, you should ask a friend or neighbour to do some watering for you. Alternatively you could invest in an advanced sprinkler that has a timer, but it is generally best to get someone to do it for you.
Another thing you need to do is to deadhead certain flowers in your garden. Once a flower starts to go brown and start to wither you should cut off the spent flowers because this will help more flowers reproduce and prolong their flowering season.
You also need to think about harvesting any fruit and vegetables that you are growing in your organic garden. Everyone knows that harvesting needs to be done at this time of the year, but it is all too easy to put it off for a few more weeks. However sometimes you can leave it too late and your crop is poor quality, and sometimes ruined, particularly if the weather suddenly deteriorates rapidly.
As we approach the autumn months it is also time to start thinking about next year. This is a great time to replenish your soil with green manures. Then when autumn arrives you can start planting bulbs for spring flowers.
You can also start thinking about what vegetables you want to grow next year. So for example you can start planting cabbages, lettuces and other vegetable crops in your organic garden.
This is also a good time to look in your garden and find any perennials that are past their best for another year, and start cutting them back. You may also want to split some perennials up in the hope that they will produce more flowers next year.
Finally you should care for your lawn as well. At this time of the year there are leaves everywhere and they can easily pile up on your lawn. This can leave your lawn deprived of sunlight to some degree and the leaves can weaken the grass. So it is a good idea to sweep them up throughout autumn.
As you can see there are a lot of jobs that need to be done in your garden during the late summer and autumn seasons. However it is worth making the effort because you will be able to enjoy the fruits of your labour for years to come if you carry out these tasks, and you will have an organic garden that you will be proud of.
